What Is the ADOS-2? Understanding Autism Assessments

When a child shows signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a comprehensive evaluation helps families find answers and next steps for care. One commonly used assessment tool in a comprehensive evaluation is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2).

What is the ADOS-2?

The ADOS-2 is a standardized, research-based assessment used by trained clinicians to observe and measure behaviors related to social communication, play, and interaction. It’s often called a “gold standard” in autism evaluation because of its accuracy and consistency across different ages and developmental levels. ADOS-2 assessments are provided at Action Behavior Centers as a no-cost service to the community.

During an ADOS-2 session, a clinician guides the child through a series of play-based or conversation-based activities designed to bring out natural communication and social behaviors. These observations help identify whether the child shows characteristics consistent with autism spectrum disorder.

How the ADOS-2 is used

The ADOS-2 can be administered to toddlers and children ages 18 months through 6 years. Because autism affects everyone differently, the assessment includes several modules, each tailored to a person’s age and language level. Results from the ADOS-2 are combined with information from parents, teachers, and other professionals to give a thorough picture of a child’s strengths and areas of need.

At Action Behavior Centers, the ADOS-2 is completed by trained, master’s-level clinicians with ongoing oversight from licensed psychologists. After the evaluation, results are sent directly to your child’s doctor, who will make the official diagnosis and recommend the next steps.

Why the ADOS-2 matters

Early, accurate identification of autism helps children access the right supports as soon as possible. ADOS-2 results can help diagnosing physicians identify autism in children as young as 18 months, allowing families to begin applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy and other services that support learning and development.

The ADOS-2 is valued for its:

  • Reliability: Consistent results across clinicians and settings
  • Objectivity: Standardized administration and scoring
  • Sensitivity: Ability to detect even subtle characteristics of autism

Flexibility: Applicable across a wide range of ages and abilities

What happens after an autism diagnosis?

If a diagnosing physician or licensed psychologist confirms an ASD diagnosis, they’ll provide recommendations for next steps. In many cases, this includes starting ABA therapy, an evidence-based treatment that helps children build communication, social, and daily living skills.

At ABC, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) conducts an initial skills assessment to design an individualized therapy plan based on each child’s needs. Therapy sessions are then implemented by a Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) or Behavioral Therapist (BT) under BCBA supervision.

This collaborative, evidence-based approach helps children learn new skills, reduce behaviors that interfere with learning, and build confidence in everyday life.
