What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a term used to describe a “Spectrum,” with individuals presenting a range of symptoms, abilities, and disabilities. One key characteristic of all Spectrum disorder is a delay or lack in social interaction. This may include a child failing to make eye contact, inability to use language/speech, failure to express wants and/or needs, or giving attention to others. Some other symptoms may include heightened sensitivity to light, sound, or textures, as well as repetitive, or stereotyped behaviors.
How is it determined whether a child should be diagnosed with ASD?
Our San Antonio center offers Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Assessments (ADOS-2) diagnostic evaluations as a service to families that are concerned about the development of their children. Many local pediatricians will refer patients to our SA center so that we can perform the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – version 2) evaluation. This 45-60 minute session is used as a key tool by diagnosticians (like a pediatrician, behavioral pediatrician, or child neurologist) to determine whether a child should be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
