What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) describes a developmental condition characterized by a range of behaviors and a wide spectrum of severity levels. Some common signs and symptoms associated with ASD are:
- Speech and communication delay
- Delay in social skills and lack of interest in peers
- Aggression and self-injury
- Self-stimulatory and repetitive behaviors
- Sensory issues
My Child isn’t Diagnosed with ASD but I’m Concerned. What Next?
If parents have concerns that their child may be on the autism spectrum, an ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition) evaluation can help families find answers.
Our McKinney ABA Therapy center offers the ADOS-2 evaluation to families. Developmental Pediatricians and Neurologists in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area often have waitlists to diagnose ASD or can be costly depending on insurance coverage. Our team of Licensed Psychologists and ADOS-trained BCBAs will run the assessment (typically 45 minutes to an hour) and use a scoring algorithm to determine a level of concern for ASD. Next, ABC will fax the results to the child’s physician to make a formal diagnostic determination.
The ADOS-2 incorporates a variety of toys, activities, and interactions with our clinicians – kiddos have fun during the evaluation!
